San Roque Old Course is probably my favourite golf course that I’ve ever played. Not necessarily the best (albeit very good!), just my favourite. When living in Spain, we were very lucky to have a corporate membership here, so I played most weekends and as a result, have some very fond memories.

San Roque have recently completed a significant renovation project on the Old Course (completed in June 2021), so I was buzzing to get back and see the changes for myself. The main layout of the course, in terms of the shape of the holes has largely remained the same, although they have flipped the 9 holes in terms of order, so you now start on what used to be the par 5, 10th.

The main changes to the course are that there is now a very visible layer of bark chippings on every hole, replacing the second cut and the rough. The greens have been totally redeveloped. The original greens are now unrecognisable, with the new ones being much bigger, with a lot more undulation. Almost half of the original bunkers have been removed, along with 3 of the lakes (from what used to be the 6th, 12th and 18th holes).

In addition to the on-course changes, the club have also transformed the practice facilities and clubhouse. It certainly looks and feels like a much more modern and premium club upon arrival.

I played the course two weeks after their maintenance period, so was fortunate to get a heavily discounted (yet still expensive) green fee. The fairways and tee boxes were quite sandy as a result, but the greens were still in excellent condition.
