La Reserva was the fourth and final course I played on a recent trip to Spain. It’s located in the Sotogrande area, very close to the world famous Valderrama. Although it’s not quite at that level, it’s one of the premium courses in the area, having hosted a number of professional events, including the European Tour in 2014, so has real pedigree. Unfortunately that means it comes with a premium price tag too though!
It’s a very picturesque and well manicured course. Some of the views are spectacular too. It’s extremely long though, it felt like I wasn’t ever going to reach the greens on a couple of the par 5s! I think a buggy is essential here as I certainly wouldn’t fancy walking this course.
Although it’s very long, the fairways are quite wide, so even though it might take one extra shot to reach the greens in regulation, there is at least more chance of keeping the ball in play. The greens are large, undulating, quick and generally just tough. It felt like I 3 putted every green! As you can probably tell by now, I didn’t score well!

The buggy hire is actually priced per person, so it caters for any solo gofers or groups of three. The electric trolley includes GPS, which is a nice, modern feature. Where is La Reserva Golf Club?
La Reserva Golf Club is nestled up amongst the hills of the Sotogrande area in Andalusia, Southern Spain. It’s a good location in terms of accessibility, very close to one of the main roads (the A-7), which is only a 5 minute drive from Sotogrande port, where you’ll find your closest bars, restaurants and shops. There are two options in terms of airports, depending on where you are flying to and from. The closest airport is Gibraltar, which is an approximate 25 minute drive, whereas Malaga will take approximately 70 mins by car.
